Trafficking in Persons Report 2009 - Ethiopia ETHIOPIA (Tier 2)

United States Department of State, Trafficking in Persons Report 2009 - Ethiopia, 16 June 2009, available at

Ethiopia is a source country for men, women, and children trafficked primarily for the purposes of forced labor and, to a lesser extent, for commercial sexual exploitation. Rural Ethiopian children are trafficked for domestic servitude and, less frequently, for commercial sexual exploitation and forced labor in agriculture, traditional weaving, gold mining, street vending, and begging. Young women from all parts of Ethiopia are trafficked for domestic servitude primarily to Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, but also to Bahrain, Djibouti, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Djibouti, Egypt, and Somaliland are reportedly the main transit routes for trafficked Ethiopians. Some women are trafficked into the sex trade after arriving at their destinations. Small numbers of men are trafficked to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States for low-skilled forced labor. While the number of registered labor migration employment agencies rose from 36 to 90 between 2005 and 2008, the government significantly tightened its implementation of regulations governing these agencies over the same period. This resulted in an increase in trafficked Ethiopians transiting neighboring countries rather than traveling directly to Middle Eastern destinations....

A young Ethiopian girl was gang raped and murdered in United Arab Emirates.
By Ali Al-Shouk

Friday 14 Aug, 2009
Police have arrested four men on suspicion of the gang rape and murder of a young housemaid.

The Emiratis were arrested following the discovery of a woman’s body last week on farmland in the Al-Daid region of Sharjah. The victim, an Ethiopian aged in her 20s, had suffered extensive wounds to her head.

Police believe she had been repeatedly struck with rocks until she died.
Sources at Sharjah Police said the woman had been working as a maid at a house in Khor Fakan in Sharjah and disappeared at the beginning of this month.
“She had been working for the three months before she disappeared from the house,” the source said. “She had no reason to disappear and no friends in the area.”
The source added: “Our investigations led us to the main suspect who is an Emirati and who has had a previous conviction for carrying out such a crime.”

During investigations the man confessed to the murder and said he had carried out the attack with three other men.
The source said the main suspect had previously been jailed for the rape and murder of a Pakistani teenage girl and had been sentenced to death for the crime.
However, after serving a number of years in jail he was then released and pardoned after paying blood money to his 13-year-old victim’s family.
According to the preliminary police investigations, the gang watched the housemaid for a number of days before kidnapping her. She was gagged and then repeatedly gang-raped.

Despite escaping from her attackers, the men hunted her down, raped her again and then killed her to prevent her identifying them to police, according to the source.

The men are being held in custody while the investigations continue.

ምጽአት (New poem)

By: cosmos-2000, June 2009

Eight Ethiopian Maids Poisoned in the UAE

Eight Ethiopian domestic workers are believed to have been murdered by poisoning in the United Arab Emirates .

Sources at the Ethiopian embassy in the UAE told the Gulf News that eight female maids had been poisoned by a compatriot maid last Wednesday in an apartment in Sharjah, the largest city in the third largest emirate of the country.

The woman accused of killing the eight domestic workers is said to be held in the emirate's central jail, but Sharjah police have publicly denied reports of the multiple murders, calling them "just rumors."

The embassy sources said the police had reported the incident to them, but were still investigating the motive behind the killings.

New Policy Permits Asylum for Battered Women

By JULIA PRESTON

Published: July 15, 2009
The Obama administration has opened the way for foreign women who are victims of severe domestic beatings and sexual abuse to receive asylum in the United States. The action reverses a Bush administration stance in a protracted and passionate legal battle over the possibilities for battered women to become refugees.

ከ 1935 እስክ 1940 የጣሊያን ወረራ በኢትዮጵያና የሴት አርበኞች ( NEW )

Interantional Ethiopian Women's Organisation (IEWO) leadership member Weizero Mulu Ayele reports how the Ethiopian Community in Rome exposes Italian crimes of war with anti-fascist Italians.

We look back in admiration and sorrow to all that pain, to all that fervour. We particularly remember that woman who presented herself to Us during the inspection we made in the Ogaden, in the early times of the war. She wore a cartridge belt and held tight an Italian rifle. These weapons had formerly belonged to the man who killed her husband in front of her eyes and then waded into her to abuse her. The whole Ethiopia was in that woman.(H.I.M. Haile Sellassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia, L’invasion de l’Ethiopie, chapter 12).

BEIRUT, LEBANON (IRIN) - Eighty Ethiopian women have been in Tripoli Women's Prison in north Lebanon for over a year, accused of not having a passport which was either taken from them when they started as domestic workers, or which they never had in the first place. Most were arrested on the street after running away from their employers - usually because of abuses ranging from forced confinement and starvation to physical harm and rape. Ethiopia's orphans face life of hardship

Jonathan Clayton
From Times Online
April 4, 2009

The Ethiopian peasant farmer and his wife shuffled painfully into the orphanage. They were in the last stages of Aids and had only weeks to live. However, they were happy. They had heard the Franciscan nuns had found a home for their three children and had come to say farewell. “I am so happy, they are going to stay together,” the father, Solomon, whispered as he embraced a middle-aged Mormon couple from Salt Lake City, Utah. “Now, I can die peacefully. They will go to school in America and have a future. It is good they leave here.” As they embraced their two daughters, aged 8 and 6, for the last time the tears ran freely. Their four-year-old son did not appreciate the significance of the moment and ran off to play with friends. Sister Luthgarder, a seasoned veteran of such heart-rending adoptions, explained: “It is sad, but it is so rare they are kept together and so I am happy.” Only a week previously a brother and sister were separated: one going to Norway, the other to Canada. “The new parents said they would take them to see each other every year, but inevitably they will grow apart,” she said.
