Let us get organized!

• Women should get organized wherever they may be.

• We should all say to ourselves “If not me who, if not now when?”

• Pass the message that women’s rights are a human rights question.

• Stand firm concerning harmful traditions, which we ourselves must get rid of.

• Keep in mind that the Girl Child deserves a better life anywhere in the world.

• Create networks amongst Ethiopian women who live nearby.

• The most downtrodden are the majority in Ethiopia so we should stay focused on the need for fundamental changes that will make a difference for the most impoverished women.

Elections in Ethiopia on Sunday, May 23, 2010: A change of majority in power?

Click here to read the article by Christophe Boisbouvier, from Radio France International on May 18 2010.

The legislative elections in Ethiopia will take place on May 23 this year. Since the country has a parliamentary electoral system, the elections will be decisive. As in Great Britain, Ethiopia has a majoritarian first-past-the-post electoral system where the members of the parliament (House of People's Representatives) are elected on the basis of the majority of votes cast in constituencies and the power lies in the hands of the Prime Minister.

Although, the post as Prime Minister has been held by Meles Zenawi over 19 years and the likelihood for change do not seem to be great.

Ghennet Girma is a long-standing voice of the opposition and member of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party. For many years, she has lived in exile in France.

Free Birtukan Midiksa!

Birtukan Midiksa, a woman at the head of a political  party (UDJ) in Ethiopia, a land lacking the rule of law, has been detained arbitrarily like thousands of political prisoners and is now suffering because of the incredibly horrible situations in the country's prisons.

IEWO/AESED calls on all opposition organizations in Ethiopia, Ethiopian humanitarian organizations as well as international organizations and institutions to denounce these abuses and call for urgent health access for Birtukan Midiksa.
